It is unusual in Japan for a newspaper company to be involved in reforestation, but Tokachi Mainichi Newspaper, Inc. is taking part in the Carbon Offset Project that promotes the planting of trees to create a forest that will absorb the carbon dioxide, one of the main causes of global warming, that is released in the production of the paper used to print newspapers.

This project is being done in the Tokachi Millennium Forest and is located in Shimizu. The forest is managed by Ranran Farm, an agricultural corporation, and they have planted 100,000 trees on approximately 200 hectares. Its aim is to recreate a natural Tokachi forest by planting native species. When the forest is restored it is hoped that it will be the home to a wide-variety of animals and plants.
Ranran Farm grows squashes, potatoes, buckwheat and beans, and has an assortment of livestock. It is also making cheese and yogurt from the milk of the goats raised there. These products are served at the farm's restaurant and sold in the gift shop.
